PetroSA handed over several payments to Imvume Management, which was later accused by an independent inquiry of illicit dealing under the oil-for-food programme in Iraq. It did so with the government of the time’s blessing[1]. Media reports also alleged that at least R11m of the money paid from PetroSA was alleged to have been given to the ANC as kickbacks to fund its 2004 election campaign[2]. “Oilgate”, as it was dubbed, was just a small part of the fossil fuel industry’s dodgy dealings in Iraq before the US invasion of 2003. Unsurprisingly, there were no prosecutions in SA, though, and dirty fuel producers laughed all the way to the bank!
